Getting this match wrong is one of the most expensive early mistakes a farm can make, either through overspending on capacity you don’t need or under-investing and limiting your yield.
Small Plots and Market Gardens
For smaller operations, drip irrigation or simple sprinkler systems usually offer the best return — lower upfront cost, efficient water use, and equipment that’s easy to maintain and expand as the farm grows.
Mid-Size Row Crop Farms
As farm size increases, the labour cost of manual or semi-manual irrigation starts to outweigh the equipment savings. Sprinkler systems with pump automation, or centre-pivot systems where the field layout allows, typically pay for themselves through reduced labour and more consistent watering.
Large-Scale Operations
At scale, water efficiency and coverage speed become the priority. Centre-pivot or lateral-move systems, matched to a pump sized correctly for your water source, reduce both labour and water waste — but only if the system is sized to your actual field geometry and water pressure, not a generic recommendation.
Matching Equipment to Your Water Source
A borehole, river source, or reservoir each have different flow-rate and pressure characteristics, and the pump and irrigation equipment need to be matched to what your source can actually deliver — oversizing a pump for a limited source wastes money and can damage the equipment.
